If I had a dollar for every time I was asked this question, I would be a very wealthy woman (because, sadly, THAT many women suffer from HA these days). I work with women who have lost their period every single day and I know that, at the end of the session when I say “Do you have any more questions?”, the reply will always be “Yes – how long will it take for my period to return?”.

The truth is, I have absolutely NO IDEA! It’s along the lines of “how long is a piece of string?”

And this is frustrating. I get it. I’ve been there. The recovery process for HA isn’t always a fun one, or one that we would CHOOSE to engage in, if we had things our way. We want a clear deadline in sight so we know when we can start to get our old life back, right? When we can start to amp up the exercise to the level of intensity that we know and love, so we can go back to our maniacal lives as they were before, so we can stop eating SO. MANY. CARBS and start to eat “cleaner” (man I hate that term) again. Are you nodding your head?

Unfortunately, if I’m going to be completely honest with you, you’ll probably NEVER be able to go back to exactly the way things were….as doing what you were doing (and hopefully not still doing) was exactly why you ended up where you are right now. When you get your period back, you want it to stay put, don’t you?

Even though it’s near impossible to predict when you will get your period back, what I do know is that those women who tend to go “all in” sooner – with food, exercise (or lack of), stress management, and smart supplementation – tend to get their periods back sooner. It’s as simple as that. If you arse around, umming and aahing, and just adding little changes in here and there, your body will not receive the “I am safe” message that it needs to receive in order to go “OK – it looks like reproduction (whether or not you want kids) is a safe and viable option right now. We can kick this whole menstrual cycle back into gear”.

And to add to this – if you want results, you need to go all in and BE CONSISTENT with everything until your cycle comes back, and it comes back REGULARLY.

But I haven’t had a period for YEARS? Am I too far gone?

This is one of the concerns I often hear. It makes sense, really – you would think that the longer your period had been MIA, the longer it would take to get things back on track, right? WRONG! In my clinical experience working with many women with HA, I have found no correlation between the time a woman has suffered from amenorrhea and the time it takes to recover. I know Nicola Rinaldi (author of No Period. Now What?) has also reported this finding, and she has done a heap of research in this area.

I have had some clients who have had HA for 5 years and their period has returned in 5 weeks! While on the flip side, other women may have only lost their period for a year and it has taken them a year to recover. Personally, I lost my period for 3 years, and it took 7 months to get it back but, if I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t 100% “all in” that whole time. I’m sure that, if I was, it would have come back sooner. That’s just how the cookie crumbles!

Oh and then there is one beautiful lady, who I had the pleasure of joining me in my 8 week online Healing Hypothalamic Amenorrhea course (which we are running again VERY SOON), who had not had a period for FOURTEEN YEARS, and she got hers back during the program!!! In 8 weeks! Crazy, right?? I’m going to leave you with a lovely piece of feedback I received from the beautiful Kate….

kate-colp“I cannot recommend Kate’s Healing HA program enough. I have had HA for 14 YEARS and have tried half-heartedly so many times to recover. With Kate’s expert advice and the support of an incredible group of women I was able to really make the necessary changes to support recovery and got my period back the last week of the course!! If you are like me and think it won’t work for you, or it’s been too long, I hope i am proof that it is possible! This course has changed my life and I will be forever grateful. It’s not easy but it is so, so worth it! If you are even considering signing up for this course, do it now! I promise it will be the best money you ever spent on yourself – you are worth it! xoxo Kate”

Hope this helps, ladies! If you’re currently suffering from HA, please do check out my all-encompassing 8 week online course Healing Hypothalamic Amenorrhea.
