Hey friend! Hope all is well in your world. I have been meaning to write this blog post for a while now (it was written into my June plan – only 2 months late). Life has been pretty busy with a newborn and a toddler, as I’m sure you can imagine. Definitely still trying to find my feet!

This was our attempt at getting some family photos – Olivia wasn’t keen on the idea. Thanks to Bel Jones for the fabulous pics.

Anyway, as most of you are probably aware by now, I have become “one of those crazy oil ladies” as I experiment with, and benefit from, using pure essential oils from dōTERRA for myself and my family. Most people just see essential oils as “little bottles of nice smelling liquid”. This is true. They do smell good (for the most part – some are quite stinky, IMO). But they also have wonderful therapeutic properties that can come about through aromatic, topical and internal use. They can be used in a multitude of ways – from cleaning, to skincare, to promoting  sleep and helping to support the body in it’s optimal functioning….which means a happier, healthier you….naturally!

BTW – ylang ylang is my fave to wear as a fragrance. So beautiful!

So I thought it might be fun to go through “a day in the life” of how I use essential oils. Yes? Well hopefully you find it fun. Please feel free to comment below this post – I’d love to hear how you use essential oils in your life!

Upon waking

A drop of peppermint, wild orange or lemon in the palm of my hand. I then rub my hands together and cup them over my nose and take a deep breath in. Hello morning! (The perfect little energiser….especially after I have been awake from 4AM with baby Ed and need to function as a semi-decent mother for Olivia).

1 drop of dōTERRA DigestZen in a little coconut yoghurt to help stimulate my digestive system, reduce bloating and reduce constipation (this really does work quite effectively!)

I take my Lifelong Vitality Supplements, which you can read more about HERE. These are making a HUGE difference to my energy levels, skin, eyes (they are HEAPS clearer), digestion, hair, nails and mood. (PS if you enrol with doTERRA in August 2017, you can grab these goodies for free! Just ask me how – kate@theholisticnutritionist.com)

A shot of me, sans make-up (except mascara) in the postpartum period

Don’t worry – not going to post a pic of me in the nudie!

I use a few different essential oils in my skincare. You can find the recipes for my non-toxic DIY skincare in THIS POST

I apply 1 drop of the Balance Grounding Blend to the soles of my feet to help me stay….you guessed it….grounded! This blend is a concoction of beautiful tree oils. One of my faves, for sure! I sometimes apply this to the soles of Olivia’s feet, too (she needs a little grounding, sometimes!)

I also apply the ClaryCalm Women’s Monthly Blend to the inside and outside of my right ankle (corresponds with the vita flex points for the ovaries and uterus) to help re-balance my hormones post-partum.

I might also pop a scant drop of frankincense on my third eye (in between my eyebrows) if I’m feeling a little bit anxious.

Through the day

I’ll pop something in my diffuser, but this really does vary day-to-day. One of my favourites is Citrus Bliss – the dōTERRA invigorating blend. But I also tend to diffuse On Guard (the protective blend) quite regularly, especially in the winter months when I want to ward of coughs, colds and other bugs.

For cleaning, I make up an all purpose spray with the following:

  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ½ cup water
  • 15 drops of OnGuard or Purify (the dōTERRA Cleansing Blend)

Shake everything up in a spray bottle, and you’re good to go! Simple, cheap and effective!

My air freshener spray that I keep in the bathroom (for obvious reasons) is made with the following:

  • ¾ cup water
  • 1Tbspn pure vanilla extract
  • 5 drops each of the following pure essential oils – lemon, lime, wild orange and lavender

Mix it all together in a spray bottle, shake before each spray (because there is no dodgy emulsifying product, it needs to be shaken prior to use). This brew cost about $2 to make!!

I use a blend of 1 drop each of Roman chamomile, lavender and frankincense in a 30mL roller bottle filled with fractionated coconut oil to rub on Ed’s feet each day to keep him calm and help support his little digestive system (he gets quite bad wind as my milk flow is literally like a fire hydrant!).

At some point during the day I might get creative in the kitchen with the oils. I do love a good hot chocolate with a scant drop of peppermint essential oil in it! A nice warming winter pick-me-up!

Lately, I have been using the dōTERRA Ice Blue blend (diluted) to help with my sore muscles. Shoulders, neck and back have been getting nauseatingly painful from breastfeeding/carrying bubs all day every day (and always looking down at my gorgeous little man). This blend is a non-toxic “Deep Heat” which really helps to release tension from sore and tired muscles.

At night

Lavender Peace all the way!!! This is dōTERRA’s restful blend – a must-have to promote relaxation and optimal sleep for the whole family. I seriously could not live without this. I massage it (diluted with fractionated coconut oil) into my soles, and Olivia’s soles, prior to bed to help us both unwind and sleep well. I also diffuse it in Olivia’s blend with a little juniper berry (to help ward off nightmares/night terrors). If anyone has a cold, I’ll also diffuse EasyAir Respiratory blend to help clear congestion and aid sleep.

So there you go! So many ways to use what mother nature has provided for us! Hopefully this has provided you with a little inspiration to use on your oily journey. If you’d like to get started using these beautiful products, please feel free to email me (kate@theholisticnutritionist.com), or check out THIS POST on how to get involved. (And also THIS POST on why I chose to align myself with dōTERRA!)

Xx Kate
